Current Shampoo and Conditioner

** Update: OGX, formerly Organix, is no longer cruelty free

I’ve reached a time where every time I wash my hair I know I’m going to have a good hair day. When I find a combination of products that just works I feel like I’m obliged to share.

OGX Coconut Water Shampoo – $7.99 CAD

Marketed as weightless hydration, I was kind of skeptical about this shampoo. I don’t have particularly dry hair, but I’ve noticed lately that my skin in general has changed from oily to dry. Unfortunately for me this includes my scalp. I’ve been having some serious dandruff issues, and I’ve noticed that since using this ‘hydrating’ shampoo, my flaky scalp issue has pretty much totally gone away. I think this shampoo is generally less harsh than others which adds to the remedy. This shampoo lathers up like no other as well, which is lovely and really makes my hair feel super clean. The smell is AMAZING. Coconutty as expected, but not in an overwhelming or sickly way. Just super clean and slightly tropical smelling. I really am impressed with this shampoo.

Weleda Oat Replenishing Treatment – $15.99 CAD

If you’ve been following this blog for a while you’ll know that I don’t use regular conditioners in my hair. I only wash my hair twice a week, and I always follow up my shampoo with a deep conditioner. For some people this may be overkill but my hair can handle it with ease. This deep conditioner in particular is kind of strange. When you squeeze out the conditioner and apply it to your hair it kind of foams up. Totally bizarre but it really makes my hair feel super soft and nourished. I leave it on for about 5 minutes in the shower and then rinse it out. This deep conditioner rinses out beautifully and never leaves any residue. It smells kind of like lemon meringue pie. I’ve had this deep conditioner for a few months and it’s still going strong, you only need a little to get the job done.

What hair care products are you loving at the moment?

2 Chic Deep Conditioner

Will I ever be satisfied with a deep conditioner for my hair? Probably not. I’ve been using the variety from OGX for some time and have always enjoyed the results, however I have never been wowed, so I decided to give a new deep conditioner a shot.

2 Chic by Giovanni Ultra Moist Deep Deep Moisture Mask – $8.99 CAD

I’ve actually been using this deep conditioner for quite some time. I have a tube sitting in my boyfriend’s shower that’s been there for about a year as I don’t wash my hair there very often. Once I ran out of my OGX conditioners at my own house, I decided to switch up to the 2 Chic offering because I was always happy with how my hair felt when I washed my hair at my boyfriend’s place.

The packaging is great, as the snap closure rests on the bottom, so all the product naturally gathers to the squeeze opening, so you’re not struggling to get product out in the shower, or trying to screw on the top of a tub. There’s only 5oz of product, which is less than the 6.7oz of product you get in the OGX deep conditioners in the squeeze tube packaging, the tubs have 5oz. The packaging is really sturdy and I’ve never had an issue with it. How I use this product is the second I get in the shower, the first thing I do is shampoo my hair, I then put a very generous amount of the deep conditioner through the mid-lengths and take special care to coat the ends of my hair, tie it up in a bun, and go about my shower. At the end I take it down and rinse thoroughly. I should also mention that I only wash my hair twice a week, and this has really gotten my hair to be super healthy. I obviously didn’t go from washing it every other day to twice a week instantly, it was a process of weaning my hair off shampoo over the course of about 6 months.

As for the actual product, I really love it. It’s a green conditioner with little darker green beads in it that are supposedly full of avocado oil to add extra moisture. I find this deep conditioner keeps my hair feeling really soft and nourished, I do get quite a few compliments on my hair, but I think that’s just because it’s super long and relatively healthy as I don’t colour it and always use a deep conditioner. The product does take an extra minute to rinse out, which I don’t find with the OGX conditioners, but I think it’s well worth it because my hair always feels really replenished. Overall I would really recommend this product.

Empties #3

It’s long overdue that I go through my bag of empties. I feel like these posts are always very informative because I’ve actually gone through an entire product, so I have a fully formed opinion by the time I’m ready to throw it away. This time around, I’ve got a lot of mascaras and deep conditioners.

First up is the Urban Decay Deslick Oil Control Setting Spray. I do really like this stuff, the mist is very nice and it smells great, however the price tag is insane, we’re talking $36 for you to spray your face so it can kind of control the oils on your face. My skin has been becoming less oily anyways, so I think my days of buying this stuff are over.

I blew through this OGX Keratin 3 Minute Miraculous Recovery Deep Conditioner like it was water, like I do with all deep conditioners it seems. I used this in place of a regular conditioner and I really liked it. I’ve bought OGX deep conditioners over and over again, and will likely continue to do so.

I was so sad to say goodbye to my Pur Minerals Impact+ Mascara. I REALLY like this stuff. Just talking about it now is making me want to go out and buy another tube. This stuff separated, volumized, and slightly lengthened my lashes. It washed off really nicely and never flaked off. From day one to my last day with this mascara I loved it. I didn’t have to wait for it to dry out for it to become amazing, which I think is rare for a mascara. I even bought a tube for my lovely friend Chloe because I wanted her to see how awesome this mascara is.

I used up a Tom’s of Maine Naturally Dry Antiperspirant in the scent Natural Powder. There is no way I can get away with just using a natural deodorant, and this was the only antiperspirant that I could find. It doesn’t really smell great, but it keeps the sweat at bay. I’ll keep buying this until I find something better, which I would like because this Tom’s antiperspirant has aluminum in it, which isn’t all that healthy.

Lastly I used up a tube of Jason Powersmile Toothpaste. I liked this stuff, it tasted super strongly of peppermint. It got my teeth feeling clean, I’m not sure about the whitening claims, but I’d definitely buy it again.

Ok this GUD Blood Orange Body Lotion was amazing. The smell was so incredibly fresh, it absorbed into my skin very nicely, and it made my skin feel really lovely. I’d buy it again in a second, however I think this scent is more suited towards the Spring and Summer months, so I would probably wait until then to buy it again.

I finished up a bottle of Batiste – however I’m unsure of their cruelty free status. I’ve seen some whisperings on Twitter that they are no longer cruelty free. Everyone knows about Batiste, it’s a good dry shampoo, but I won’t repurchase until I’m certain of their status. If anyone has any clarity on this issue I’d love to hear about it!

I finished up two mascaras. The NYX Frou Frou Mascara and the Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Mascara. I didn’t really care for either of these. The NYX one just left my lashes feeling really dry and average looking, and the Physician’s Formula one didn’t really do anything for my lashes, it smudged really easily, and I cannot stand plastic wands. While these are both drugstore mascaras, I wouldn’t suggest either of them. I’m still trying to find a good affordable option that’s cruelty free, so if you know of any I’d love to hear about them!

Another OGX deep conditioner here, this time it’s the Sea Mineral Moisture variety. I feel like all the OGX deep conditioners work the same, just the scents vary. I preferred the Keratin scent, but I liked this one as well.

Lastly is the ELF Essential Wet Gloss Last & Brow Clear Mascara which I got last year when April from Blushing Biddies and I did our beauty swap. This stuff was great for setting my brows, I used both sides for the same purpose. Thanks April for this great find. If you’re reading this, we should do another swap in the new year! 🙂

Alright, that’s all my trash this time around. I wonder how much stuff I’ll go through next time.
